Waifu2x enlarges images 2x while reducing compression artifacts and preserving clean edges, using convolutional neural networks originally trained on anime-style artwork. Despite that specialized origin, it holds up reasonably well on photographic content too, and it's remained a popular free option for basic upscaling long after fancier paid tools arrived.
