Mistral builds both open-weight models — the Mistral and Mixtral series — and closed frontier models served through its Le Chat app and API, with a real reputation for squeezing strong performance out of smaller, cheaper-to-run models. It's become the default choice for European organizations that want serious AI capability from a company operating under EU data protection rules, and a major 2025 investment from chip-equipment maker ASML gave Mistral both a capital boost and a notably strategic industrial backer.
