Google's open-source terminal agent for Gemini
Gemini CLI puts Google's Gemini models in your terminal. You run it inside a repo, ask it to explain code, fix a bug or write a feature, and it reads files and runs shell commands to get there. It is released under an open-source license, so you can read how it works and extend it.
Sign in with a personal Google account and you get a generous free allowance, which makes it an easy way to try an agentic coding workflow without paying first. It supports MCP servers and project context files, so you can teach it about your codebase and hook it up to other tools.
It is strongest on large codebases because of Gemini's long context window. Like any terminal agent, it works best when you review the diffs it proposes rather than letting it run unattended.
