Devin opens a terminal, writes and runs code, browses documentation, and iterates on a task until it's done, marketed as an AI that can be handed a well-scoped engineering task rather than just suggesting the next line of code. Early demos drew both hype and real skepticism about how autonomous it actually was in practice, and Cognition has since expanded well beyond Devin alone — acquiring Windsurf's team and product in 2025 after a proposed OpenAI acquisition of Windsurf fell through, putting Cognition in a stronger position in the broader agentic coding market.
