Free AI code completion across 40+ editors
Codeium was the original name of what is now Windsurf, an AI coding assistant that started as a free, low-friction alternative to GitHub Copilot. It offered real-time autocomplete, an in-editor chat assistant, and code search across more than 40 editors and IDEs, including VS Code, JetBrains, and Neovim, running on the company's own foundation models rather than a licensed third-party API. That independence let it offer a genuinely generous free tier with no token caps, which is what drew a lot of developers to it over paid competitors in its early years.
The company rebranded fully to Windsurf in 2025 as it shifted focus toward agentic coding with its Cascade system, and the Codeium name was retired from the consumer product; codeium.com now redirects straight to windsurf.com. Windsurf itself then went through a major ownership shakeup: Google hired away its CEO, co-founder, and a large chunk of its engineering team, while Cognition, the maker of the autonomous coding agent Devin, acquired the remaining company, its IP, and its user base. In mid-2026 Cognition folded Windsurf into its own lineup and renamed it Devin Desktop.
So as a standalone product, Codeium no longer exists under that name. What it evolved into now functions as Cognition's desktop coding agent, keeping the same editor, extensions, and settings users of Codeium and Windsurf were already used to, but positioned as the local counterpart to Devin's cloud-based autonomous agent rather than a simple autocomplete tool.
