Brevo started life in Paris in 2012 as Sendinblue, one of the earlier European companies to make a serious run at the email marketing space long dominated by American names like Mailchimp and Constant Contact. It renamed itself Brevo in 2023, a signal that the company saw itself outgrowing email as a category description, since by then it had added SMS, WhatsApp campaigns, a CRM, and live chat. The rebrand landed around the same time the company reached unicorn status, backed by investors including Sequoia, which is a fairly unusual funding pedigree for a marketing tool built outside Silicon Valley.
Unlike most of the products it gets compared to, Brevo genuinely has AI built into the workflow rather than bolted on for a press release. There's a subject line assistant that suggests alternatives based on what's historically performed well, and a send-time optimization feature that learns when each individual recipient tends to open email and staggers delivery accordingly instead of blasting everyone at nine in the morning sharp. Both features sit on top of a transactional sending API that works fine on its own if that's all you need. The appeal, especially for small businesses, is consolidation: instead of paying for a transactional API, a marketing platform, an SMS tool, and a basic CRM separately, Brevo tries to be the one login that covers all four, with reasonable if not spectacular execution on each.
