About

AWS GovCloud (US) is a physically and logically isolated set of AWS regions designed for US government agencies, contractors, and any organization that needs to run regulated workloads with sensitive compliance requirements. It gives customers access to most of the same services available in commercial AWS regions (EC2, S3, Lambda, RDS, and increasingly AI and ML tools like Bedrock and SageMaker) but restricts access to vetted US persons and operates under a control framework that meets FedRAMP High, DoD Cloud Computing SRG, ITAR, CJIS, and export control requirements.

The typical customer is a federal, state, or local government agency, a defense contractor, or a commercial company handling controlled unclassified information (CUI) or subject to export regulations like ITAR. These organizations need cloud infrastructure that satisfies specific legal and contractual obligations around data residency, personnel screening, and audit controls, obligations that commercial AWS regions are not built to meet on their own. GovCloud lets them build modern applications, run analytics, and increasingly deploy AI workloads while staying inside a compliance boundary auditors and contracting officers will actually accept.

What sets GovCloud apart from commercial AWS is the isolation model itself: separate infrastructure, restricted operator access limited to screened US persons, and a region built from the ground up around government-specific accreditations rather than compliance layered on top after the fact. It competes most directly with Microsoft Azure Government and Google Cloud's government offerings, and its main advantage is AWS's breadth of services and its head start in getting FedRAMP High and DoD IL5/IL6 authorizations for a wide swath of its catalog.
