AutoGPT began in early 2023 as an open-source experiment that gave GPT-4 memory, internet access, and the ability to break a goal into sub-tasks and pursue it with minimal human input. The platform can be self-hosted for free, with a cloud-hosted version still rolling out in beta.
AutoGPT is aimed at developers and technical teams who want to automate multi-step workflows without hand-coding an agent loop, and at anyone curious about autonomous agents who wants a low-code way to experiment. Its real distinction in a now-crowded field is history: it's the project that proved the concept and inspired much of what came after, and its open-source roots and large early community still give it more name recognition than most of the frameworks that followed it.
