About

Artbreeder is a browser-based tool for blending and evolving images using generative models. It started around genetic algorithm style breeding of StyleGAN faces and landscapes, letting you cross two or more images and nudge the result with sliders that control age, gender, style, color, and other traits rather than typing a text prompt. Over time it added text-to-image generation, a splicer tool for combining reference images, and a collager mode for compositing elements, so it now sits somewhere between an old-school GAN playground and a modern diffusion-based generator.

It's aimed at hobbyists, character designers, and concept artists who want to explore variations on a face, creature, or scene without drawing from scratch, and it's popular for anime character design, portrait experimentation, and album or book cover art. The community aspect is central: every image you make can be published, and other users can "breed" it further, so a huge amount of the site's content is remixed lineage from other people's uploads rather than isolated one-off generations.

What sets it apart from most image generators is that remixing existing work, not prompting from zero, is the default workflow, and the slider-based trait editing gives a more direct, tactile way to steer an image than adjusting a text prompt. It's been around since 2018, which makes it one of the older names in AI image generation, though newer prompt-driven tools like Midjourney and Stable Diffusion have overtaken it in raw image quality and mainstream attention.
