About

Amazon CodeWhisperer was AWS's AI coding assistant, generating real-time code suggestions and full function completions inside IDEs like VS Code, JetBrains, and AWS Cloud9. It was trained with particular strength on AWS APIs and services, so it tended to produce more accurate suggestions for tasks like calling S3, DynamoDB, or Lambda than general-purpose assistants. It also included a built-in security scanner that flagged vulnerabilities such as injection risks and checked suggested code against known open source licenses, attributing matches back to their source.

It was aimed at developers already working in the AWS ecosystem, from individual coders to enterprise teams who wanted an assistant with awareness of AWS infrastructure and best practices, plus the compliance-friendly reference tracking that security-conscious organizations cared about.

AWS has since retired the CodeWhisperer name and folded its functionality into Amazon Q Developer, which keeps the same AWS-aware completions and security scanning but adds a chat interface, debugging help, and infrastructure-as-code generation in one product. Anyone starting fresh today should use Q Developer rather than looking for CodeWhisperer, since AWS no longer offers it as a separate product.
