About

Amazon Bedrock is AWS's fully managed service for accessing foundation models through a single API, covering models from Anthropic (Claude), Meta (Llama), Mistral AI, Stability AI, Cohere, AI21 Labs, and Amazon's own Titan and Nova families. Instead of hosting and scaling model infrastructure yourself, you call one consistent interface and swap between models as needed, with usage billed through AWS. It handles the surrounding plumbing too: fine-tuning on your own data, Knowledge Bases for retrieval-augmented generation, Agents for orchestrating multi-step tasks and tool use, and Guardrails for filtering harmful or off-topic content.

It's aimed at developers and enterprises building production AI applications who want model choice without managing GPUs or separate vendor contracts. Because it sits inside AWS, it plugs directly into existing services like S3, Lambda, IAM, and CloudWatch, which makes it a natural fit for teams already running their stack on AWS and needing things like data residency controls, VPC isolation, and centralized billing that a raw API from an individual model provider wouldn't give them.

What sets Bedrock apart from calling model APIs directly is that it's provider-agnostic within one AWS-managed environment: you're not locked into a single model vendor, and switching or A/B testing between Claude, Llama, or Titan is a configuration change rather than a new integration. The tradeoff is that Bedrock trails the frontier providers on access to the newest model releases and advanced features, since it depends on each vendor making those available through AWS first.
