Adobe After Effects is a desktop application for motion graphics, compositing, and visual effects. Editors and animators use it to build title sequences, animated graphics, and VFX shots, layering footage, vector art, and effects on a timeline with keyframe-based animation. It's part of the Creative Cloud suite and integrates closely with Premiere Pro and Illustrator, which makes it a common step after editing in a broader video production pipeline.

The software has been the default tool for motion design and broadcast graphics for decades, and its plugin ecosystem (Trapcode, Element 3D, and many others) extends it into 3D rendering, particle effects, and other specialized work. AI-assisted features like Roto Brush for rotoscoping and Content-Aware Fill for object removal have cut down time on tasks that used to require frame-by-frame manual masking.

It's aimed at professional and semi-professional users: motion designers, VFX artists, video editors, and agencies rather than casual hobbyists, partly because of its learning curve and partly because of the subscription cost. Newer competitors have chipped away at specific niches (simpler animation tools, browser-based editors), but After Effects remains the standard reference point for compositing and motion graphics work in film, TV, and advertising.
