01.AI is a Beijing-based AI lab founded by Kai-Fu Lee in 2023, built initially around the Yi family of open-weight language models. The early Yi models drew attention for matching or beating larger proprietary systems on standard benchmarks at a fraction of the training cost, and the company briefly reached unicorn status within months of launch. Yi-Lightning, a later addition, was positioned as a lower-cost alternative to GPT-4-class models.

As competition from DeepSeek, Alibaba's Qwen, and other Chinese labs intensified through 2024 and 2025, 01.AI largely stepped back from pretraining its own frontier-scale foundation models and shifted toward enterprise software built on top of Yi and other third-party models, including DeepSeek's. Its current flagship products include Wanzhi, a multi-agent enterprise platform, and Boss AI, a tool aimed at giving executives a consolidated view of company data for decision-making.

01.AI is best understood now as an applied AI company selling vertical products to Chinese enterprises rather than a pure model lab chasing benchmark leadership. It still maintains and releases Yi models on Hugging Face for developers who want open weights, but the company's business and revenue have moved toward packaged agent and analytics tools for corporate customers.
