SearchGPT

A prototype of new search features, using the strength of our AI models to give you fast answers with clear and relevant sources.

What is SearchGPT?

We are currently testing SearchGPT, a prototype designed to merge the capabilities of our AI models with web information to provide quick, accurate answers with clear and relevant sources. This prototype is being launched to a select group of users and publishers to gather feedback. Although temporary, we aim to integrate the best features of this prototype directly into ChatGPT in the future. If you’re interested in trying it, please sign up for the waitlist.

A New Way to Search Searching the web can often be time-consuming and require multiple attempts to find relevant results. We believe that by enhancing our models' conversational abilities with real-time web information, finding what you need can become faster and easier.

Designed to Provide Direct Answers SearchGPT will swiftly respond to your questions with current web information, providing clear links to relevant sources. You can ask follow-up questions in a conversational manner, with shared context building with each query.

Partnering with Publishers and Creators We are dedicated to supporting a thriving ecosystem of publishers and creators. Our goal is to help users discover publisher sites and content while offering more search options. Search has long been a vital way for publishers and creators to reach users. Now, we are using AI to enhance this experience by highlighting high-quality content in a conversational interface, offering multiple engagement opportunities.

AI search is poised to become a key method for navigating the internet. It is essential that this technology respects and protects journalism and publishers. We look forward to partnering with OpenAI to create new ways for readers to discover content like that from The Atlantic.

SearchGPT is designed to connect users with publishers by prominently citing and linking to them in searches. Responses will include clear, in-line attributions and links, so users know the source of the information and can quickly access more results via a sidebar with source links.

We have partnered with publishers to develop this experience and continue to seek their feedback. Along with the SearchGPT prototype, we are launching tools for publishers to manage their appearance in SearchGPT, giving them more control. Importantly, SearchGPT focuses on search and is separate from training OpenAI’s generative AI foundation models. Sites can appear in search results even if they opt out of generative AI training.

We have also heard from publishers and creators who want to understand how best to engage with AI search products and how their content performs. We will use this prototype to learn and share findings. If you have feedback, please email us at [email protected].

Sam and the talented team at OpenAI understand that for AI-powered search to be effective, it must be based on high-quality, reliable information from trusted sources. The relationship between technology and content must be symbiotic, and provenance must be protected.

What’s Next We will continue to enhance the experience, focusing on areas like local information and commerce. We also plan to gather feedback from users and publishers and integrate the best features into ChatGPT. If you’re interested in trying SearchGPT, please sign up for the waitlist.
